Meal plan & supplements

John’s meal-plan calculator guide, and the handful of supplements he actually recommends — with the safety notes first.

01

Meal plan

This plan is more of a guideline than actual schedule of meals. What I have done is formulate a calculator to help you determine several key factors in designing a proper plan for whatever your goal is. Whether it’s to maintain your weight and live healthy, lose weight and get ripped or gain weight to add muscle.

In addition, it will determine the length of your program based on your body fat goal and current percentage of fat. I also provide you your BMI, how much fat you need to lose, how long it will take to lose it and “roughly” what weight you should be at to achieve your goal.

I also provide you with all your macro nutrient numbers and daily caloric requirements and key points to follow in order to achieve success.

Supplements

As always, check with your doctor before taking anything, especially if you’re having surgery or pregnant. The following recommendations are for informational purposes and in no way should be adopted or applied unless discussed with your physician.

Supplement are serious business:

  • Always, check with your doctor or other healthcare provider before taking any supplements: See a D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine)
  • They may interfere with Surgeries, Medications, or other procedures. I.e. Fish oil, Gingko Biloba- inhibit Clotting.
  • Grapefruit- Can endanger a person taking medication because it blocks the enzyme your body uses to break down the drug. In turn the body can reach toxic levels of the medication. Not just grapefruit, other citrus fruits like limes. The medication list is long but involves cholesterol meds, anti anxiety drugs, blood pressure meds and ones that fight infections to name a few.
  • Be careful not to “Double Dip”- Extra accidently taken- i.e. two supplements have the same ingredient in them.
  • Be sure to read labels for food and other allergies you may have.
  • Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the labels.

The supplements below are currently used by the medical community and have proven health benefits:

  • Co Q10- Heart health, helps create energy. Usually taken if you are on statin drugs aka Cholesterol meds.
  • Vitamin & Mineral- Food based, no “Mega formula’s”. Usually for pre-natal.
  • Vitamin D3- Bones, immune system.
  • Omega 3 (DHA / EPA) – Heart and inflammation, also thins the blood.
  • Trans resveratrol – Knotweed and Red wine. Good for anti-aging.
  • Turmeric | Curcumin- This is a CO2 inhibitor like ibuprofen for inflammation. It’s natural though and gives mustard it’s yellow color.
  • Magnesium- Help to relax muscles and most Americans are deficient. A sublingual Magnesium Citrate version or Magnesium glycinate which doesn’t cause gastric distress.
  • Probiotics- Heal intestinal dysbiosis as well as fermented foods (Immune system)

Below are some of the supplements I recommend. As always check with your physician before taking any supplements or following my recommendations.

I should also mention that there a wide variety of supplement brans out there. Quality and freshness are vitally important because they may lose their potency. The are two brands that Stand out to me. One is Garden of Life and the other is Pure Encapsulations.

Both are fresh and pure, however many people may have intolerances to many of the packaging or suspensions ingredients in most all supplements. Pure Encapsulations takes all those out and delivers a very hypo-allergenic product that is high quality and fresh. Garden of life is very similar and a very high-quality producer as well. There are other brands out there that are great products but I’m going to limit examples to these two brands for now. Below is a short list of my favorites.

FISH OIL
Supplement

FISH OIL

Fish oil is also an important component of Overall health. It’s involvement in heart health, inflammation, depression and Alzheimer’s are the main health benefits it’s known for but, there are many others. An interesting note. Every cell in the body depends on EPA & DHA which are the two main ingredients in Fish oil.

GLYCINE
Supplement

GLYCINE

In my opinion, this is probably the best kept secret in the health & fitness industry and I don’t know why. Glycine is beneficial for the production of Glutathione and Creatine, two very important substances in staying healthy and fit. It is also the main ingredient in collagen which is important for tissue repair. Most of all, it is a great sleep aide when combined with magnesium. It also helps protect the liver from alcohol induced fatty liver.

SIZE:       3000mg a day is recommended.

MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE
Supplement

MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE

Magnesium is vital to so many reactions in the body I would need 3 pages to list them. For exercise purposes, it is vital to heart health and other muscles by helping them relax. It’s also vital for bone health. I like the glycinate form because it does not cause gastro-intestinal stress like magnesium citrate, which is a component of most laxatives.

VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID)
Supplement

VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID)

There are many types of vitamin C out there but the most absorbable form is ascorbic acid. Up to 1000mg a day is generally tolerated well but if it isn’t, try a buffered C. Vitamin C is great for the immune system and repairing cartiledge and other tissue after injury.

SIZE:       500-1000mg a day.

COST:     I like pure encapsulations. It’s roughly $43.90 for a bottle of 250 capsules.

VITAMIN D3
Supplement

VITAMIN D3

Also called the sunshine vitamin because it’s produced in your skin in response to sunlight. Vitamin D is technically a hormone and it’s important for bone health in regulating calcium and phosphorus as well immunity. It’s also important for weight loss. The surprising thing is many american’s are deficient in vitamin D so get checked.

Dosage:    2000iu’s or 50 MCG/60CT is common but check your doctor or other healthcare provider.
